Background
Project Overview

StarzHD set out to replace a mission-critical authentication and user management backend that had been delivered by an external vendor and lacked proper documentation. The goal was not a simple migration, but a gradual, low-risk replacement that would improve reliability, performance, and long-term scalability — without disrupting active users. CyberHULL partnered with StarzHD to reverse-engineer the existing system and re-architect it into a cloud-native, multi-region, highly resilient platform capable of handling authentication, authorization, geolocation validation, and sensitive user data at scale.

Challenges

The key obstacles we needed to overcome to transform the digital experience.

High-Volume Auth & Authorization

Handling high-volume authentication & authorization requests with real-time geolocation and access checks.

Sensitive Data Security

Securely storing and processing sensitive user and content data across multiple AWS accounts with private service communication.

Multi-Region Failover

Supporting multi-region failover with near-zero downtime while migrating from on-premise infrastructure to cloud.

Undocumented Vendor Logic

Replacing undocumented vendor logic without functional regressions while remaining operational during third-party service outages.

GDPR Compliance

Meeting GDPR compliance requirements without interrupting live traffic.

Solutions
Our strategic approach to solving each challenge with precision and expertise.
Reverse Engineering & Platform Rebuild
Reverse-engineered the legacy backend with no reliable documentation
Re-implemented using C# and .NET Core for full containerization and cloud deployment
Decompiled, re-engineered, optimized, and re-implemented third-party libraries missing from .NET Core ecosystem
Eliminated dependency risk and improved long-term maintainability
Secure Authentication & Traffic Optimization
Implemented JWT-based authentication and authorization
Significantly reduced cache and database load
Improved request latency and system stability
Added HTTP hardening techniques to protect against malformed or abusive traffic
Optimized inter-service communication using message queues
Cloud-Native Data Architecture
Introduced NoSQL data modeling for high-throughput access patterns
Initially deployed on Apache Cassandra, later migrated live to AWS DynamoDB with zero downtime
Data models designed to avoid hot partitions, tombstone buildup, and GSI overload
Leveraged native multi-region replication for geographic resilience
Identified multithreading issues and escalated to AWS — resulting in upstream fixes
Multi-Region Resilience & Observability
Designed and deployed multi-region failover
Enabled balanced traffic distribution across regions
Introduced application-level monitoring using existing observability stack
Continuously refined metrics based on real production behavior
Quality, Compliance & Automation
Built full backend integration and performance test suite
Ensured functional and performance consistency across releases
Implemented GDPR-compliant data handling and storage
Enabled real-time configuration synchronization via custom centralized config service
Results
Zero Downtime
No service interruptions since production rollout
Maintained uptime even during third-party outages
